The summer can be a lonely time for a sports fan. The NBA Finals and Stanley Cup both end in the beginning of June. The NFL and college football don’t start until the beginning of September. The only major U.S sport on the docket is baseball(although we get a major soccer tournament every two years.)
July and August tend to be pretty boring months sports wise. Unless, your baseball team is good and they give you something to keep an eye on. The Phillies were just that until September. They were in first place for a large chunk of the summer and even up until now they were in striking distance of first place. However, they took their end of August slump and made it worse. The Phillies have played themselves out of the race with an absolutely dreadful September. They had us fooled for most of the year.
As it turns out, the Phillies will end up being closer to the .500 team we all thought before the season started rather than the playoff team they showed to themselves to be most of the season. It’s sad, but it is still a marked improvement over where the team has been the last five seasons. With that said, let me just thank the Phillies for making things interesting until football got here.
I almost forgot what it was like to watch meaningful baseball games while waiting for football to come back around. I will never take those years(07-11) for granted ever again. So I thank the Phillies, for occupying my sports fandom these last two months. Now let’s try and finish above .500, and really go for it all next year.
